After many clients purchased the original Pearl of Great Price© pendant and became intrigued with the concept, I was asked if I had a cross pendant in the collection. I did not originally create a cross because the original pendant was created for me personally. I wasn’t really looking to create a cross because there are so many in the market already. For me, the pendant featuring the pearl with the vine and gemstone represented my value and eternal life, very personal.
As more and more clients requested a cross pendant, I decided to sketch ideas. Typically, the first sketches are the most obvious solution, but I like to discard those and go deeper into the symbolism and concept.
All of the jewelry in my Jewelry of Faith Collection incorporates a pearl, the symbol of your value. I sketched a cross and placed the pearl in the most obvious position, at the intersection of the beams, assuming that the original sketch would be discarded. When studying the sketch to analyze what I liked and didn’t like about the design, I got goose bumps when I realized that if the pearl represents me and is positioned at the intersection where the body is placed, then it symbolizes that I have also been crucified with Christ;
“I have been crucified with Christ.” Galatians 2:20.
There was no reason to experiment any longer. I constructed the cross with the vine itself and the leaf of the vine became the bail, just as it does on the original Pearl of Great Price© pendant. It is the perfect conceptual solution for this collection.
